Ultra-Efficient Freestyle: New Book–First Look
by Terry Laughlin

Posted on January 24th, 2015

On January 30, on the iTunes/iBooks store we’ll release my latest book Swim Ultra-Efficient Freestyle.  While the original TI book has become the most popular swimming book in history, I believe Ultra-Efficient Freestyle is my best effort, as an author (and ‘explainer-of-swimming’) to date. But I’ll leave that to readers to judge, and I hope you’ll be among them.

While the book will not be available for order until Jan, 30, you can read a fairly detailed description, see sample pages, and download an excerpt now at this link.

From now until launch date–and probably for some time thereafter–I’ll post a short blog most days with an excerpt. Each will feature one of the many informative lists of thoughts or principles or actions I’ve included in the book.

This first list is excerpted from the Introduction.

Total Immersion’s ultra-efficient Freestyle is distinguished by these characteristics:

  1. It’s immediately and universally recognizable as a standard ‘form’—like yoga asanas. Every ‘signature’ element in TI Freestyle—from the neutral head position, extended bodyline, and symmetrical arm recovery to the 2-Beat Kick—is there for a compelling reason, which the chapters that follow will explain.
  2. It treats the human body as a system in which all parts are intricately inter-related—and thus the actions of all body parts should be seamlessly synchronized.
  3. It’s not ‘naturally occurring.’ Only a tiny number of elites swim this way by innate instinct. For everyone else, TI Freestyle is an learned skill and an intentional action.
  4. However, the striking similarity in form attained by countless thousands of TI enthusiasts worldwide shows that it’s a stroke anyone can learn (including Dr.Paul Lurie who took his first lesson at age 94). It doesn’t require youth, athleticism, or special gifts.
  5. A striking number of those who learn it become passionately curious and improvement-oriented (Kaizen) about swimming.

  1. Great news. I met Coach Laughlin in New Paltz a few weeks back during a weekend series with one of the TI coaches, Carlson. Felt honored to get input from both coaches. The analogy to yoga asanas is on point. The total is greater than the sum of the parts. Can’t wait for publication.

  2. Matthew Moloshok says:

    Looking forward to the book

  3. Vadim says:

Hi there, will the book be available in non-US appstores?
Is it possible to buy it somewhere else?
    What about a hard copy?

  4. The book is available initially only through Apple’s iTunes store. It will soon be available for download on our website. I do plan to have it translated into other languages fairly soon –including Russian.

  5. Vadim says:

Great news! Thank you. Will be looking forward for availability in Russian Appstore and at the site.

  6. Owen says:

what is the difference between the ibooks version and the website version? in the email I think it said there were some features only in the ibooks version. What are they?

  7. There are a couple of image ‘galleries’ – a sequence of several pix illustrating something — that you can click thru in ibooks version, not in pdf. But 99% of the two versions are the same.

  8. Chris says:

If I just bought the video series (which I love, btw) and I got the .pdf user guide, should I also buy this book, or is the content similar? I also have your previous, revised & updated TI book.

Thanks for asking. And for your enthusiasm for the video series.
The Ultra Efficient Freestyle (UEF) book gives the big picture on the whole-stroke. The workbook and videos focus more on refining all the critical pieces and ‘assembling’ them in the right order.
I believe you’ll find the UEF book easily justifies the additional $10 investment by giving you a far greater breadth of understanding of, and countless details about, the whole stroke.

  10. Sasha says:

Oh, great news! Will go and find it now 🙂 I love your TI book!

  11. Rizwan says:

    Sir,
How can I get this Book & DVD in India

    You can download here.

    Hi,
I just took the workshop that Terry had in Santa Fe at the Santa Fe Community College and he mentioned his book Ultra Efficient Freestyle that can be purchased. I prefer to have a hard copy of it. Can you please advise where I could purchase a hard copy – I looked both on Barnes and Noble and Amazon.com and only found electronic versions.

He also mentioned that there was a discount coupon of $!0.00 that could be used towards its purchase.

I would appreciate your response asap.

    Thanks so much!
